At the start of season, all i wanted was a sustained title challenge, successful passage into the CL knockout rounds and that we won’t drop points to the big 4 esp Chelsea and Man U

But in honesty, Liverpool has exceeded all my expectations..
We beat Man U at home. Woo hoo
We beat Chelsea away. Woo hoo x 2
We drew with Arsenal away. Woo hoo x 3
We went thru to the CL knockout rounds and topped our group. Our reward was meeting Real Madrid and what a match that will be.
And we are TOP of the league with three points ahead of Chelsea.

Of cos, we dropped silly points at home but hey, our closest rival couldn’t take advantage of it. Luck or our closest rival are succumbing to the pressure of chasing Liverpool or the “little” teams has finally figured out a way to hold the big teams back? Maybe it is a mixture of all 3 factors but there is no denying that we are up on top on merit.

It has been an exciting season so far with our brilliant comebacks and it has been great to see youngsters like Ngog, Spearing, Kelly, Darby, El Zhar, Insua make their marks in the first team. Hopefully, they are able to replace the fringe players(like Pennant) in the near future and save $$$ for the club.

With Torres coming back, i hope that he remains fit and score as many goals as he did last season. The team has shown great resilience and now, it is time to add some class to the resilience and continue to dominate at the top of the league !

Walk on !

LFC 0 – 0 West Ham

Blackburn 1 – 3 LFC :)

PSV 1 – 3 LFC :) :-)

LFC 2 – 2 Hull

Arsenal 1 – 1 LFC

LFC 3 – 0 Bolton :)

Newcastle 1 – 5 8-O :) :D

Summary:

I felt that we should have gone for the win against a 10-men Arsenal side but w/o Rafa at the sidelines and it was an away game, a draw would suffice. but all in all, it has been a fantastic month for Liverpool. We are now 3 points ahead of Chelsea!

More of the same in 2009 !!!!

Spurs 2 -  1 LFC :(

LFC 1 – 1 Atletico Madrid

LFC 3 – 0 West Brom

Spurs 4 – 2 LFC (Carling Cup)

Bolton 0 – 2 LFC

LFC 0 – 0 Fulham

Summary:

Lazy to comment. But it has not been a fantastic month but at least, we are still joint top with Chelsea.

LFC 1 – 0 Pompey

:) Pompey came with one game plan. To defend with 10 men and that is what they did. A stupid handball by Diop gave us the penalty and SG scored.

Chelsea 0 – 1 LFC

What more to say?  Xabi Alonso’s first-half goal ended Chelsea’s 86-game unbeaten home league record. This game showed the maturity of the team and how far we have come from GH’s days..

Atletico Madrid 1 – 1 LFC

A fair result although i felt that we should have sew up the game by half time. Keane scored LFC’s goal

LFC 3 – 2 Wigan

Another brilliant comeback game by LFC. We were 2-1 down during half time with Kuyt getting the equaliser. Zaki was a terror and our defence couldn’t handle him but once again, we came storming back with Riera and Kuyt scored the winning goal again!

Man City 2 – 3 LFC

Absolutely brilliant game by LFC. We were 2-0 down as we made mistakes when defending. But we came storming back with 2 goals from Torres(who else) and Kuyt scored the winning goal !

Everton 0 – 2 Liverpool

A Torres double !! And hopefully, more to come :)

Liverpool 3 – 1 PSV

Kuyt scored the first goal of the match

Keane scored his first goal

SG scored his 100th goal

Woo hoo.. :)

Finally !!

Yes yes yes !

Marseille 1 – 2 Liverpool :)

Liverpool 0 – 0 Stoke

Arghghghghghgh.. :(

Liverpool 2 -1 Crewe

A draw is probably a fair result based on the performance of both teams.. After the Barry saga, it put the Villa fans in full voice and the atmosphere was quite electrifying. My tv volume was quite soft liao and it still felt that i was in Villa Park. Hopefully, Anfield can regain their voices and be as loud as them against Man U but i disgress.

With the backing of their fans, i am surprised that Villa was quite conservative. I was expecting a full-out assault using their turbo-jet A380 wingers i.e. Young and Agbonlahor but it didn’t turn out that way. It was more of a battle to control midfield. They were contended to play narrow and pass the ball to Petrov and Barry. Arbeloa and Dossena kept Young and Agbonlahor in their pockets rather well. Honestly, i barely heard Young or Agbonlahor’s name till the last 5 mins. The only clear chance that they got was when Arbeloa let Young get the better of him which allowed Reina to earn his wages for the week by making a good save against Carew’s shot.

As for our side, what can i say? A workman-like performance which showed a few things
1) 4-2-3-1 is our best formation.

2) Dossena is playing well. He bombed forward as much as he could and managed to defend well too. Too bad, none of our players managed to read his crosses. There was a cross which managed to elude everyone and if there was player in the back post, it was an easy goal

3) Keane showed his intelligence when he drifted into the centre and i am not sure if anyone noticed, he is becoming one of the leaders of the team. During the first 20-30 mins of the first half, he was directing Dossena where to cover and he was defending from the front. Now, all he needs is a goal !

4) Alonso and Mascherano is our best CM pairing. Mascherano’s engine and tenacity matched with Alonso’s passing and calmness allowed Dossena to bomb forward. All of chances started from the left side. Now, we have to sort out the right side. Arbeloa didn’t bomb forward as much and was contended to pass the ball rather than pushing forward

5) Why Ngog and not Babel? The only reason that i can think of is that Babel has not been playing well and Ngog did well during pre-season. And he did play well when he came on but in the second half, he drifted out of the game. I might be a little bit harsh but other than the chance that he shot narrowly over the bar, he didn’t really do much. He ducked out of challenges esp when there was a 50-50 ball in the air, he didn’t even jump. I expected more from him after his pre-season exploits but i think once he is used to the game, he will be better

6) What happened to the Benayoun of pre-season?

7) Our defence and midfield has been sorted out. Now it is left for our Keane to click with the midfield and strikers. From the way i look at it, Keane is an important fulcrum to our attack. If he still doesn’t click, we will be struggling to create chances.

8) Who can take over Torres ? Keane / Babel / Ngog ? I would have Babel with Keane supporting him

In summary, it was a tough game and we are still in touch with the leaders. With Man U coming up next, i hope that SG and Torres will be fit for the match..

Standard Liege 0 – 0 LFC

Sunderland 0 – 1 LFC

LFC 2-1 Boro

LFC 1 – 0 Standard Liege

Summary of the matches ? Play ugly but still win. Signs of a champion?

LFC 1 – 0 Man City

Spurs 0 – 2 LFC

In his very first season, Torres has broken the record for the best goal tally by a foreign player in his first season. He has been the striker that we have been waiting for since Fowler & Owen. He is totally in a class of his own.

Another bright spark is that our reserves won the reserve league. That is quite a feat considering that there was no senior players in the reserve team. Our future looks bright and i hope that we will have a conveyor belt of talent in the near future.

Anyway, the ownership debacle has not been resolved and it is worrying as the transfer window is opening soon. LFC can only have one owner and i hope that it won’t be Hicks nor Gillett

The minute that JAR scored the own goal, Chelsea was destined to go into the finals..

LFC 1 – 1 Chelsea

Chelsea 3- 2 LFC

But the team put up a great fight and i wish Chelsea all the best for the finals. I really hope they win !
